Green Smoothies for Pregnant & Nursing Moms

A green smoothie is simply a blend of leafy greens such as spinach, and fruits, such as strawberries or bananas. Greens are an important part of a healthy diet because they are high in amino acids, minerals (important for the development of the fetus), folate (critical in preventing spina bifida, a developmental birth defect).

Why are greens important for moms?

The benefits of leafy greens are terrific. They are antioxidant storehouses, have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, are rich in minerals, and they are detoxifying. Moms need them to stay healthy during pregnancy and when breastfeeding, when our nutritional needs go up dramatically, and fetuses need them to develop properly.

Moreover, breastfeeding babies need the nutrients to keep up with the many growth spurts they will go through during their infancy. Green smoothies might ensure that mom keeps up with her fluid intake.

Green smoothies are a very healthy food for mom and baby, and they should be consumed regularly as long as they are part of an otherwise healthy and balanced diets.

Here’s how to prepare a nutritious Green Smoothie!

Ingredients

  • Spinach
  • Strawberries & a banana
  • low-fat yogurt
  • Milk
  • Flax seeds

Preparation Method

Add spinach and flax seeds to your blender, followed by milk and yogurt, then banana and strawberries. Add few ice cubes to make the smoothies nice & cold!
