Dahi Wada Recipe – Healthy snack for Moms

This is a perfect snack for a city like Mumbai where it is always humid and sweaty. And if your pregnancy related craving is demanding a ‘chaat’ – the Dahi wada will surely fulfill your expectations.   • Urad dal, washed and soaked – 1 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Dahi – 6 cups
  • Powdered sugar – 18 tsp
  • Dates or Imli chutney – 3 tbsp
  • A pinch each of salt, jeera powder and red chilli powder for assembling the dahi wadas
  • Corriander leaves, finely chopped – 1 tsp
  • Oil for frying
  • Ice cubes – 10-12


Thoroughly wash urad dal and soak overnight. Strain the soaked urad dal and grind to a fine paste using very little water.Heat oil in a kadhai. Take some urad dal mixture in a separate bowl and add salt as per taste and mix well. When the oil is hot, spoon the urad dal mixture and drop in hot oil. Salt should be added to small quantities of batter just before frying else it will give out water making the mixture soggy.

Fry the wadas on medium flame till they turn golden. Once done, transfer them to a bowl of ice cold water. Squeeze the wadas that are resting in ice water and assemble in a serving bowl. In a separate bowl, take 2 cups of dahi and add 6 tsp of powdered sugar and about 1/2-3/4 cup of water and mix well. This mixture should be slightly thin. Pour this dahi over the wadas that are in the serving bowl.

Refrigerate them until the serving time. Before serving wadas, add the remaining dahi and powdered sugar in a bowl and mix well till sugar is dissolved.In a small serving bowl, add the wadas, pour some thick sweetened dahi over it. Sprinkle a pinch of salt, jeera powder and red chilli powder. Add chopped corriander and serve chilled.
