Chocolate is perfectly safe for pregnant women— recent research indicates that there’s a good reason to give in to your chocolate cravings during pregnancy.
Pregnant women must eat chocolate in moderation. Eating too much chocolate will make you less hungry for other foods that you need to maintain a balanced diet. Chocolate is high in calories and can significantly contribute to weight gain. Secondly, Chocolate also contains caffeine. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recommends that pregnant women keep their caffeine intake below 200 milligrams (mg) a day.
Although there have been conflicting opinions about the effect chocolate can have on pregnancy, it certainly provides a lot of benefits to pregnant women. A few are listed below:
- Chocolate contains good anti-oxidants: Chocolates are rich in flavonoids which are believed to contain potent antioxidants – these help in improving immunity.
- Chocolate has iron & magnesium: Magnesium is known to help significantly with fatty acid metabolism.
- Dark chocolate reduces the risks of heart disease
- Chocolate aids in blood pressure regulation: Cocoa, which is used to make chocolate, contains theobromine which helps in proper regulation of blood pressure among pregnant women.
- Research evidence suggests that eating chocolate during pregnancy could lower your risk of preeclampsia.
- Chocolate is a stress buster: We didn’t have to tell you this one. The bottom line is that chocolate is comforting and can no doubt improve a pregnant woman’s mood.
Pregnant women can safely consume chocolate, but don’t over do it. Eat chocolate in moderation.
